Suppose there was a dried up, withered log, and it was lying on dry land far from the water. Then a person comes along with a drill-stick, thinking to light a fire and produce heat. What do you think, Aggivessana? By drilling the stick against that dried up, withered log on dry land far from water, could they light a fire and produce heat?” “Yes, worthy Gotama. Why is that? 「アッギヴェッサナよ、たとえばここに、乾ききって萎びた丸太があるとしよう。それが水から遠く離れた、乾いた陸の上に置かれているとする。そこへある人がやって来て、上木（うわき）を手に取り、『火を起こし、炎を現わさん』と思う。アッギヴェッサナよ、そなたはどう思うか。その人が、水から遠く離れた乾いた陸の上に置かれた、その乾ききって萎びた丸太に上木を当てて鑽（き）り続けるならば、火を起こし、炎を現わすことができるであろうか」と。
「さよう、ゴータマ尊者よ、できましょう。それはなぜかと申せば、その丸太は乾ききって萎びており、しかも水から遠く離れた陸の上に置かれておりますゆえ」と。
