「火を起こし、熱を生ぜしめんとするならば」と。アッギヴェッサナよ、汝はいかに思うか。もし人がその青々とした湿り気ある薪（kaṭṭha）を——水より遠く離れた乾いた地に置かれたものを——取り上げ、上木（uttarāraṇi）をもって擦り合わせるならば、はたして火を起こし、熱を生ぜしめることができるであろうか」と。
「それは叶いませぬ、ゴータマ尊者よ」。
「それはいかなる故にか」。
「ゴータマ尊者よ、そはそもそも青々とした湿り気ある薪にございます。たとえ水より遠く離れた乾いた地に置かれておりましょうとも」と。
「アッギヴェッサナよ、さらに第三の譬喩（upamā）が、かつて聞いたこともなき、不思議なるものとして、わが心に浮かびたるなり。
まさにそのごとく、アッギヴェッサナよ、いかなる沙門（samaṇa）あるいは婆羅門（brāhmaṇa）であれ、身（kāya）においても心（mano）においても、諸々の欲楽（kāma）より退き離れて住する者——そして内にあって欲楽への渇望を捨て去りたる者——は……
