「水の中に沈められた、みずみずしく樹液を含んだその青木を用いて、火錐（ひきり）で擦ったとしても、その者は火を起こし、熱を生じさせることができましょうか」
「いいえ、それはできません、ゴータマ様」
「それはなぜですか」
「ゴータマ様、その木はみずみずしく樹液を含んでおり、しかも水の中に沈められているからでございます」
「アッギヴェッサナよ、さらにもう一つの譬え（たとえ）が、かつて聞いたこともなく、不思議なものとして、わたしの心に浮かんだのである。その者は、ただ疲労と苦悩（くのう）とを受けるに至るであろう、と」
「まさにそのように、アッギヴェッサナよ、身（しん）においても心（しん）においても欲楽（よくらく）から離れて遠ざかり独り住むところの沙門（しゃもん）・婆羅門（ばらもん）たちがいる。しかし彼らは、内なる欲（よく）・貪著（とんじゃく）・耽溺（たんでき）・渇愛（かつあい）を、いまだ内に捨て去らず、静め尽くしてはいないのである」
