‘Stay, venerable. This teaching is such that a sensible person can soon realize their own tradition with their own insight and live having achieved it.’ I quickly memorized that teaching. 「尊者よ、留まりたまえ。この法（ダンマ）は、賢明なる者がまさしく速やかに、みずからの師の伝承を自ら直接知り（abhiññā）、証得して（sacchikatvā）、具足して住することのできるようなものである」と。
アッギヴェッサナよ、そこでわたしは、まことに速やかに、その法を学び了えた。アッギヴェッサナよ、わたしはその程度のこと——口の端に乗せ、言葉を繰り返すだけのこと——によって、知識の説を説き、長老の説を説き、「わたしは知り、わたしは見る」と言明した。他の人々もそのように言明した。
アッギヴェッサナよ、そのときわたしに、かくの如き思いが起こった。
そこでアッギヴェッサナよ、わたしはアーラーラ・カーラーマのもとへと赴いた。赴いて、アーラーラ・カーラーマに告げた。「友よ、わたしもあなたと等しく、あなたもわたしと等しい。さあ、尊者よ、わたしたちふたりでともにこの教団を導こうではないか」と。
