Before sitting down to one side, some of the Licchavīs bowed, some exchanged greetings and polite conversation, some held up their joined palms toward the Buddha, some announced their name and clan, while some kept silent. リッチャヴィー族の人々は、それぞれに異なるやり方で世尊のもとに近づいた。ある者は世尊を礼拝してから一方の側に座り、ある者は世尊とともに挨拶を交わし、懐かしく心楽しい言葉を交わしてから一方の側に座り、ある者は世尊に向かって合掌（añjali）を捧げてから一方の側に座り、ある者は世尊の御前にて自らの名と家系（nāmagotta）を告げてから一方の側に座り、ある者はただ黙して一方の側に座った。
かくして一方の側に座したサッチャカ・ニガンタの子は、世尊にこのように申し上げた。
「もし尊者ゴータマが機会をお与えくださるならば、わたくしはある一点について尊者ゴータマにお尋ね申し上げたいと思います。」
「アッギヴェッサナよ、望むままに問うがよい。」
「尊者ゴータマは、いかにして弟子たちを導かれるのでしょうか。また、弟子たちへの教導（sāsana）は、おおむねいかなる事柄を主題としてなされるものでございましょうか。」
