Now at that time around five hundred Licchavis were sitting together at the town hall on some business. I’ll play a game of hemp-washing with the ascetic Gotama, like a sixty-year-old elephant would plunge into a deep lotus pond and play a game of hemp-washing! Come forth, good Licchavīs, come forth! そのころ、五百人ほどのリッチャヴィ族の人々が、何らかの用件のために集会所に集まっておった。
「善き方々よ、リッチャヴィの人々よ、いざ参られよ、いざ参られよ！ 今日こそ、わたしは沙門ゴータマと論議（kathāsallāpa）を交わすことになろう。ちょうど六十歳の老象が深い蓮池に踏み入り、麻洗い（sāṇadhovina）の遊戯をなすように、わたしは沙門ゴータマとそのような遊戯をなしてみせよう！」
そこでニガンタの子サッチャカは、かのリッチャヴィ族の人々のもとに近づいていった。近づいてから、かのリッチャヴィ族の人々にこのように語りかけた。
「善き方々よ、リッチャヴィの人々よ、いざ参られよ、いざ参られよ！ 今日こそ、わたしは沙門ゴータマと論議を交わすことになろう——」
