「アッギヴェッサナよ、あなたのように貪（とん）・瞋（じん）・癡（ち）を離れていない者を布施の対象（福田・ふくでん）として施した場合、その功徳は施主のものとなるであろう。しかし、わたしのように貪・瞋・癡をすでに離れた者を布施の対象として施した場合、その功徳はあなた自身のものとなるであろう。」
「では、尊者アッサジよ、沙門ゴータマはいかにして弟子たちを導かれるのでしょうか。また、弟子たちに対する教誡（きょうかい）は、主としていかなる事柄について行われるのでしょうか。」
「アッギヴェッサナよ、世尊はこのようにして弟子たちを導かれます。また、弟子たちに対する教誡は、主としてこのような事柄について行われます。『比丘たちよ、色（しき）は無常（むじょう）である。受（じゅ）もまた——』」
