それはなぜか。マガダの国の聡明な牧牛者は、雨季の終わる秋の候、ガンジス河のこちらの岸をよく見極め、かなたの岸をよく見極めたうえで、浅瀬において牛の群れを彼岸へと渡したのである。
これと同じように、比丘たちよ、この世（此岸）に通達し、かの世（彼岸）に通達し、悪魔（マーラ）の領域（māraddheyya）に通達し、その及ばぬ領域に通達し、死神（maccuddheyya）の領域に通達し、その及ばぬ領域に通達している、そのような沙門（サマナ）・婆羅門（バラモン）がいる。かれらの言葉に耳を傾け、かれらを信頼するに値すると思う者には、その者の長夜にわたる福利と安楽とがあるであろう。かれらはガンジスの流れを胸もて押し渡り、安らかに彼岸へと到達したのである。
