全世界を直接に知り、あまねく覚れる仏陀（ブッダ）は、死を超えた解脱（げだつ）の門を開き示された。
「比丘（びく）たちよ、昔、マガダの国に愚鈍なる一人の牛飼いがいた。雨期（うき）の終わる最後の月、秋の季節のことであった。彼は、ガンジス河のこちらの岸をよく見極めることもなく、また向こうの岸をよく見極めることもなく、渡し場ならぬところから、スヴィデーハーの人々の住む北の岸へと、牛の群れを渡らせようとした。ところが、牛たちはガンジス河の流れの真ん中でひとかたまりに群がり、そのまま流れに巻かれて、その場で災難と滅びに遭ってしまった。それは何ゆえであるか。比丘たちよ、そはまさに、このマガダの牛飼いが愚鈍なる者であったがゆえに、雨期の……」
