It’s when a mendicant tolerates a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought that has arisen. They tolerate any bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen. They don’t give them up, get rid of them, eliminate them, and obliterate them. That’s how a mendicant doesn’t pick out flies’ eggs. And how does a mendicant not dress wounds? 比丘たちよ、ここに比丘が、生じた欲の思い（kāmavitakka）に堪え忍ぶ。それを捨てず、除かず、滅し去らず、無に帰せしめない。生じた瞋恚の思い（byāpādavitakka）に……また生じた害心の思い（vihiṁsāvitakka）に……次々と生起する諸々の悪しき不善の法（pāpaka akusala dhamma）に堪え忍ぶ。それらを捨てず、除かず、滅し去らず、無に帰せしめない。比丘たちよ、このようにして比丘は、蝿の卵を取り除かぬ者となるのである。
では比丘たちよ、いかにして比丘は、傷口を覆い隠す者となるのであろうか。比丘たちよ、このようにして比丘は、傷口を覆い隠す者となるのである。比丘たちよ、ここに比丘が、眼によって色（rūpa）を見るとき、その相（nimitta）と細相（anubyañjana）とに捉われる。眼根（cakkhundriya）が守護されることなく放置されるならば……
