When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha: “Worthy Gotama, there are those ascetics and brahmins who lead an order and a community, and tutor a community. They’re well-known and famous religious founders, deemed holy by many people. Namely: Pūraṇa Kassapa, the bamboo-staffed ascetic Gosāla, Ajita of the hair blanket, Pakudha Kaccāyana, Sañjaya Belaṭṭhiputta, and the Jain ascetic of the Ñātika clan. 挨拶と儀礼的な言葉を交わし終えると、かれは傍らに座して、世尊にこのように申し上げた。
「ゴータマ師よ、教団（サンガ）を率い、集いを導き、その師として知られ、高名にして、教えの開祖として多くの人々に聖者と仰がれる沙門・婆羅門たちがおります。すなわち、プーラナ・カッサパ、竹杖の行者マッカリ・ゴーサーラ、毛衣のアジタ・ケーサカンバラ、パクダ・カッチャーヤナ、サンジャヤ・ベーラッティプッタ、そしてニガンタ（離繋者）のナータプッタがそれでございます。彼らはおのれの主張に照らして、はたして〔真理を〕証知（abbhaññaṁsu）したのでしょうか。それとも証知せざるままであったのでしょうか。あるいは、一部の者は証知し、一部の者は証知しなかったのでございましょうか」と。
