「それは縁（えん）に依るのであって、縁なしには起こらない。何を縁とするのか。触（そく）を縁とするのである。」かくして、その比丘は、触もまた無常（むじょう）であると観じ、受（じゅ）もまた無常であると観じ、想（そう）もまた無常であると観じ、行（ぎょう）もまた無常であると観じ、識（しき）もまた無常であると観じる。その者の心は、かの界（かい）を所縁（しょえん）としてのみ、躍り出で、清く澄み渡り、安住し、そして決定するのである。
友よ、もしその比丘に対して、他の者どもが、好ましからぬもの、厭わしきもの、不快なるものをもって対するならば――たとえ拳をもって打ち、石をもって打ち、杖をもって打ち、あるいは刃物をもって打つことがあろうとも――その比丘はかく了知する。「この身体は、まさにかくのごとき性質のものであり、かくのごとき身体においては、拳もて打たるることも、石もて打たるることも、杖もて打たるることも、また刃物もて打たるることも、起こり得るものである。」
