「友よ、あらゆる野の生き物の足跡はことごとく象の足跡の中に収まる。それゆえ象の足跡は、その大きさにおいて、それらすべての中で最上と称されるのである。それと同じく、友よ、いかなる善法（クサラ・ダンマ）も、そのすべては四つの聖なる真理（四聖諦・チャトゥ・アリヤサッチャ）に摂め尽くされるのである。
いかなる四つか。苦に関する聖なる真理（苦聖諦・ドゥッカ・アリヤサッチャ）、苦の生起に関する聖なる真理（苦集聖諦・サムダヤ・アリヤサッチャ）、苦の滅に関する聖なる真理（苦滅聖諦・ニローダ・アリヤサッチャ）、そして苦の滅へと導く道に関する聖なる真理（苦滅道聖諦・パティパダー・アリヤサッチャ）、この四つである。
