Seyyathāpi, āvuso, suṇisā sasuraṁ disvā saṁvijjati saṁvegaṁ āpajjati; Tassa ce, āvuso, bhikkhuno evaṁ buddhaṁ anussarato, evaṁ dhammaṁ anussarato, evaṁ saṅghaṁ anussarato upekkhā kusalanissitā saṇṭhāti, so tena attamano hoti. Ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, bhikkhuno bahukataṁ hoti. Katamā cāvuso, āpodhātu? Āpodhātu siyā ajjhattikā, siyā bāhirā. Katamā cāvuso, ajjhattikā āpodhātu? Yaṁ ajjhattaṁ paccattaṁ āpo āpogataṁ upādinnaṁ, seyyathidaṁ— pittaṁ semhaṁ pubbo lohitaṁ sedo medo assu vasā kheḷo siṅghāṇikā

それはちょうど、嫁が舅（しゅうと）を見て畏れの心を起こし、緊張するようなものである。しかし、友よ、もし比丘が、このようにして仏（ブッダ）を随念（ずいねん）し、このようにして法（ダンマ）を随念し、このようにして僧伽（サンガ）を随念して、善（くさら）に依拠した捨（うぺっカー）が安定するならば、彼はそのことをもって満足する。友よ、比丘にとって、これだけのことでも、すでに多くのことがなされたのである。では友よ、水界（āpodhātu・水の要素）とは何であるか。水界には、内なるものと外なるものとがある。では友よ、内なる水界とは何であるか。それぞれの有情に属する内なるもので、水であり、水性を帯び、執取（しゅしゅ）されているもの、すなわち――胆汁（たんじゅう）・痰（たん）・膿（うみ）・血・汗・脂肪・涙・油脂・唾（つば）・鼻汁（はなじる）
