At one time the venerables Ānanda and Bhadda were staying near Pāṭaliputta, in the Chicken Monastery. Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Bhadda came out of retreat, went to Venerable Ānanda, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Ānanda: “What’s the cause, Reverend Ānanda, what’s the reason why the true teaching declines? あるとき、尊者アーナンダと尊者バッダは、パータリプッタ近郊の鶏園精舎に滞在されていた。その日の午後遅く、尊者バッダは静坐より出られ、尊者アーナンダのもとへと赴き、ともに挨拶を交わされた。挨拶と礼儀にかなった言葉を交わし終えると、バッダは一方の座に着き、アーナンダに向かってこう申された。「アーナンダ尊者よ、いかなる因縁により正法は衰滅するのでしょうか。またいかなる因縁により正法は衰滅せずに住するのでしょうか。」「善きかな、善きかな——」
