At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Koliyans, where they have a town named Haliddavasana. Then several mendicants robed up in the morning and, taking their bowls and robes, entered Haliddavasana for alms. Then it occurred to them, “It’s too early to wander for alms in Haliddavasana. Why don’t we visit the monastery of the wanderers of other religions?” “Mendicants, when wanderers of other religions say this, you should say to them: ‘But reverends, how is the heart’s release by
あるとき、世尊はコーリヤ族の地、ハリッダヴァサナという町の近くに滞在しておられた。そのとき、数人の比丘たちが朝に衣を整え、鉢と衣を持ってハリッダヴァサナへ托鉢に入ろうとした。すると彼らは思った。「ハリッダヴァサナで托鉢するには、まだ時が早い。他の宗派の遊行者たちの僧院を訪ねてみてはどうだろうか」と。
「比丘たちよ、他の宗派の遊行者たちがそのように説くならば、汝らはこう答えるがよい。『しかし、尊者たちよ、心の解脱とはいかなるものでありましょうか』と。」
