“Mendicants, suppose a person were to throw a yoke with a single hole into the ocean. And there was a one-eyed turtle who popped up once every hundred years. What do you think, mendicants? Would that one-eyed turtle, popping up once every hundred years, still poke its neck through the hole in that yoke?” “Only after a very long time, sir, if ever.” “That one-eyed turtle might poke its neck through the hole in that yoke, but in any case it’d be sooner than a fool fallen to the underworld is rebor
比丘たちよ、譬えば一つの孔を持つ軛を大海に投げ入れたとしよう。そして百年に一度だけ水面に浮かび上がる隻眼の亀がいたとする。比丘たちよ、如何に思うか。百年に一度浮かび上がるその隻眼の亀が、かの軛の孔に首を差し入れることがあるであろうか」と。「それは甚だ長き時を経ねばならぬことにございましょう、尊師よ。もしそのようなことがあるとすれば」と。「その隻眼の亀が軛の孔に首を差し入れることがあるとしても、それはいずれにせよ、悪趣に堕ちた愚者が再び人間に生を受けるよりも、遥かに速いことであろう。
