「比丘たちよ、星と星の間に広がる無辺の暗黒は、かくも深く闇に閉ざされており、かの大いなる威力と神通を具えた月と太陽の光明をもってしても、何ら照らし得るところがない。」
かく仰せになると、比丘の一人が世尊に問うた。「世尊よ、その暗黒はまことに大いなるもの、はなはだ大いなるものであります。しかし、その暗黒よりもさらに大いなる、さらに恐ろしき暗黒というものが、他にございましょうか。」
「ある、比丘よ。」
「世尊よ、それはいかなるものでございましょうか。」
「比丘よ、それは、苦諦・集諦・滅諦について、あるがままに了知せず……する沙門・婆羅門たちのことである。」
