“Mendicants, suppose someone were to say: ‘Without truly comprehending the noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path, I will completely make an end of suffering.’ That is not possible. 比丘たちよ、譬えば或る者が「苦・苦集・苦滅・苦滅道の聖諦を如実に了知することなく、苦の完全なる終滅を成就せん」と言うならば、それは叶わぬことである。恰も或る者が「平屋の下階を建てぬうちに、上階を引き上げん」と言うが如し、それは叶わぬことである。これと同じく、比丘たちよ、或る者が「苦・苦集・苦滅・苦滅道の聖諦を如実に了知することなく、苦の完全なる終滅を成就せん」と言うならば、それもまた叶わぬことである。
