カピラヴァットゥにて。サーラカーニは修行を全うしなかった。」そこでサッカ族のマハーナーマは仏陀のもとへ赴き、礼拝して一側に座し、その事の次第を申し上げた。仏陀は仰せになった。その時、サッカ族のサーラカーニはすでに命を終えていた。仏陀は彼が預流果を得た者であり、悪趣に堕することなく、必ずや菩提へと向かう定めにあると宣言された。これを聞いて、数人のサッカ族の者たちが集まり、不平を言い、嘆き、異議を唱えた。「ああ、なんと信じ難く、なんと驚くべきことか！ 誰が預流果を得られぬことがあろうか――
