At one time Venerable Anuruddha was staying near Sāvatthī in the frankincense-tree hut. It’s not easy to make it slant, slope, and incline to the west. 或る時、尊者アヌルッダは、サーヴァッティー近郊の白檀樹の庵に滞在されていた。「それを西に傾け、西に向け、西に流れさせることは容易ではない。あの大勢の群衆も、いずれは疲れ果て、嫌気がさすであろう。」そこで尊者アヌルッダは、比丘たちに向かってこう語られた。「尊者方よ、たとえばガンジス河が東へと傾き、東へと向かい、東へと流れているというのに、大勢の群衆がやって来て、鋤と籠を手にしてこう言ったとしましょう。『我々はこのガンジス河を西に傾け、西に向け、西に流れさせよう』と。さて、それは如何なものでありましょうか。」
