“Mendicants, of all the trees belonging to the titans, the vivid patala is said to be the best. In the same way, the faculty of wisdom is said to be the best of the qualities that lead to awakening in terms of becoming awakened. And what are the qualities that lead to awakening? The faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom are qualities that lead to awakening, in that they lead to becoming awakened. 比丘たちよ、阿修羅に属するすべての樹木の中で、あの鮮やかなるパータラの樹が最勝と称せられる。それと同じく、菩提に資するもろもろの法の中にあって、覚りを得るという意味において、慧根が最勝と称せられるのである。では、菩提に資する法とは何か。信根・精進根・念根・定根・慧根の五根こそが、覚りへと導くがゆえに、菩提分法と称せられるのである。阿修羅に属するすべての樹木の中で、あの鮮やかなるパータラの樹が最勝と称せられるように――
