「比丘たちよ、閻浮提にあるすべての樹木の中で、閻浮樹（じゃんぶじゅ）が最勝と称されるごとく、まさにそのように、覚りに導く諸法の中において、慧根（えこん）こそが覚りの成就という点において最勝と称されるのである。」かくのごとく、覚りに導く諸法の中において、慧根は覚りの成就という点において最勝と称される。では、覚りに導く諸法とは何か。信根（しんこん）・精進根（しょうじんこん）・念根（ねんこん）・定根（じょうこん）・慧根（えこん）、これらの五根こそが、覚りに導く諸法である。
