“Mendicants, there are ascetics and brahmins who don’t understand the eye faculty, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. They don’t understand the ear faculty … nose faculty … tongue faculty … body faculty … mind faculty, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. 「比丘たちよ、眼根を知らず、その生起を知らず、その滅を知らず、その滅に至る道を知らない沙門・婆羅門たちがいる。耳根を……鼻根を……舌根を……身根を……意根を知らず、その生起を知らず、その滅を知らず、その滅に至る道を知らない者たちがいる。私はそのような者たちを、真の沙門・婆羅門とは認めない。かの尊者たちは、沙門たる目的・婆羅門たる目的を現法において自ら証知し、具現して住することなく、その果を実現し得ないのである。」
