Then Dustin the warrior chief went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: What does the Buddha say about this?” “Sir, I have heard that the warriors of the past who were tutors of tutors said: ‘Suppose a warrior, while striving and struggling in battle, is killed and finished off by his foes. When his body breaks up, after death, he’s reborn in the company of the gods of the fallen.’ What does the Buddha say about this?” “Enough, chief, let it be. Don’t ask me that.” For
やがて、武将ドゥスティンは仏陀のもとに赴き、礼拝して一方に座し、こう申し上げた。「世尊よ、この件につきまして、世尊はいかにお説きになりますでしょうか。世尊よ、私はかつて聞き及んだことがございます。往昔の武士たちの師の師たちはこのように語ったと申します。『もし一人の武士が、戦場において奮闘し苦闘しながら、敵の手によって討たれ命を落としたならば、その者は身体の壊滅ののち、死後において、戦没の神々の眷属に生まれ変わるであろう』と。世尊よ、この件につきまして、世尊はいかにお説きになりますでしょうか。」
「首長よ、それで十分です。その問いはそのままにしておきなさい。その問いを私に尋ねてはなりません。」
