「尊者サーリプッタよ、人々は『究竟』と呼ばれるものを説きます。この究竟を証得するための道があり、修道があります。」
「尊者よ、この究竟を証得するための道は殊勝なる道であり、修道は殊勝なる修道であります。この一事のみをもってしても、精進するに十分であります。」
「では、究竟とは何でありましょうか。」
「尊者よ、貪・瞋・癡の滅尽、これを究竟と称するのであります。」
「しかし尊者よ、この究竟を証得するための道と修道はありましょうか。」
「尊者よ、あります。」
「して、それはいかなるものでありましょうか。」
「他ならぬこの八聖道がそれであります。」
