“Mendicants, these five hindrances are destroyers of sight, vision, and knowledge. They block wisdom, they’re on the side of distress, and they don’t lead to extinguishment. What five? Sensual desire, ill will, dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt. These five hindrances are destroyers of sight, vision, and knowledge. 比丘たちよ、これら五つの蓋は、眼と視野と智を滅ぼすものである。それらは般若を妨げ、苦悩の側に立ち、涅槃へと導くことがない。その五とは何か。欲貪、瞋恚、惛沈・睡眠、掉挙・悪作、そして疑惑である。これら五蓋は、眼と視野と智を滅ぼすものである。それらは般若を妨げ、苦悩の側に立ち、涅槃へと導くことがない。これら七つの覚支は、視野と智を生み出すものである。
