このように私は聞いた。——あるとき、世尊（ブッダ）はラージャガハ（王舎城）のギッジャクータ（鷲の峰）山に滞在しておられた。
そのとき、夜もふけた頃、四人の大王（マハーラージャ）たちが、夜叉（ヤッカ）の大軍、乾闥婆（ガンダッバ）の大軍、鳩槃荼（クンバンダ）の大軍、龍（ナーガ）の大軍を率い、四方に守りを設け、四方に部隊を配し、四方に防衛を固めた上で、その輝かしい御姿の光明をもってギッジャクータ山をくまなく照らしながら、世尊のもとへと近づいた。近づいてから世尊を礼拝し、一方の端に座した。
夜叉（ヤッカ）たちもまた——ある者は礼拝し、ある者は丁寧な挨拶を交わし……
