So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans in a stilt longhouse in a mango grove belonging to those Sakyans named Vedhaññā. Now at that time the Jain ascetic of the Ñātika clan had recently passed away at Pāvā. このように私は聞いた。あるとき世尊（bhagavā）はサッカ族の人々の国に滞在しておられた。ヴェダンニャーと呼ばれるサッカ族の人々の、芒果（マンゴー）林の中にある高殿においてであった。ちょうどそのころ、ニガンタ・ナータプッタがパーヴァーにおいて、つい先ごろ命終していた。その命終によって、ニガンタ（nigaṇṭha）の修行者たちは二つに分裂し、互いに相争い、口論し、論争に陥って、言葉の矢をもって互いに傷つけ合いながら過ごしていた。「汝はこの法と律（dhammavinaya）を知らぬ。われこそこの法と律を知っておる。汝がどうしてこの法と律を知り得ようか。汝は邪なる道を歩む者である。われこそ正しき道を歩む者である。わが言葉は道理にかなっており、汝の言葉は道理にかなっていない。先に言うべきことを汝は後に言い……」
