1. On Past Lives So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery, in the hut by the kareri tree. このように私は聞いた。ある時、世尊はサーヴァッティー（舎衛城）のジェータ林、アナータピンディカ（給孤独）長者の園精舎において、カレリ樹のそばの小堂に住しておられた。
さて、食後、托鉢より戻った数多くの比丘たちが、カレリ樹のそばの円堂に集い座したとき、彼らの間に過去世（プッベニヴァーサ）に関する法の談話が起こった。「かくのごとく過去世においてはあった、かくのごとく過去世においてはあった」と。
「比丘たちよ、阿羅漢にして正等覚者（サンマーサンブッダ）たるヴィパッシン（毘婆尸）世尊には、三たびの声聞（サーヴァカ）の集会があった。その一の集会には六百八十万の比丘があり、一の集会には十万の比丘があり、一の集会には八万の比丘があった。——これらはことごとく……」
