“Mendicants, suppose there were four venomous vipers of awesome might. Then a person would come along who wants to live and doesn’t want to die, who wants to be happy and recoils from pain. They’d say to him, ‘My friend, here are four venomous vipers of awesome might. They must be periodically picked up, washed, fed, and put to sleep. But when one or other of these four venomous vipers gets angry with you, you’ll meet with death or deadly pain. So then, my friend, do what has to be done.’ ‘Empty
比丘たちよ、譬えば、ここに四匹の猛毒の蝮蛇ありて、その威力まことに恐るべしとせよ。そこへ一人の人がやって来る。その者は生きることを願い、死を望まず、楽を求め、苦を厭うのである。人々はその者に告げるであろう。「友よ、ここに威力恐るべき四匹の猛毒の蝮蛇がある。これらを折に触れて取り上げ、洗い清め、食を与え、眠らせねばならぬ。しかし、この四匹の猛毒の蝮蛇のいずれかが汝に怒りを起こさば、汝は死に至るか、あるいは死に等しき苦痛を受けることになるであろう。さあ友よ、なすべきことをなせ。」「空
