“Mendicants, the eye is impermanent. Seeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed. They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.’” The cause and reason that gives rise to the eye is also impermanent. 眼は無常である。かくのごとく観ずるとき、多聞の聖弟子は、眼・耳・鼻・舌・身・意に対して厭離の心を生ずる。厭離するがゆえに、欲貪は滅し去る。欲貪の滅するがゆえに、解脱を得る。解脱を得たるとき、解脱せりという智が生ずる。そして「生は尽き、梵行は成就し、なすべきことはすでになされ、もはやこの世に再び生まれることなし」と了知する。眼を生起せしめる因と縁もまた無常である。無常なる因と縁より生じたる眼が、いかにして常住たり得ようか。
