At one time Venerable Mahākaccāna was staying in the land of the Avantis in a wilderness hut near Makkarakaṭa. 時に、尊者マハーカッチャーナは、アヴァンティ国のマッカラカタ付近にある林の庵に滞在されていた。その頃、バラモン・ロヒッチャの弟子である数人の学徒たちが、薪を集めながらマハーカッチャーナの庵へと近づいてきた。彼らは庵の周りをぐるぐると歩き回り、さまざまな嘲りの声を上げながら、大きな喧騒を引き起こした。「これらの剃髪者どもは、偽りの沙門、未開の輩、我らが親族たる主の御足より生まれた賤しき黒き者どもではないか！それでもなお、いわゆる……と称する者たちから、礼拝され、敬われ、尊ばれ、崇められ、重んじられているとは。」
