あるとき、尊者バーラドヴァージャ（乞食者）はコーサンビーのゴーシタ精舎に滞在しておられた。そこへウデーナ王が尊者バーラドヴァージャのもとを訪ね、互いに挨拶を交わした。挨拶と丁重な言葉を交わし終えると、王は傍らに座し、こう申し上げた。「尊きバーラドヴァージャよ、ここに若き比丘たちがおります。彼らはまだ若く、漆黒の髪は艶やかで、青春の恵みを受け、まさに人生の盛りにあります。しかも彼らはいまだかつて欲楽に耽ったことがない。いかなる因縁があって、いかなる理由によって——」
