「比丘たちよ、旅をしても世界の果てを知ることも、見ることも、至ることもできない、とわたしは説く。しかしまた、世界の果てに至ることなくして、苦の滅尽もあり得ない、とも説く。」
かく仰せになると、世尊は座より立ち上がり、御房へとお入りになった。
仏陀が去られてほどなく、比丘たちはこう思案した。「世尊はこの簡略なる要義をお示しになったが、その義を詳らかにお説きになることなく、御房へとお入りになった。……誰がこの簡略なる要義の意を、詳しく解き明かすことができるであろうか。」
