“Mendicants, Uddaka son of Rāma used to say: Hereupon, ever the undug boil’s root is dug out!’ ‘Hereupon, ever the knowledge master! Hereupon, ever the conqueror of all! Hereupon, ever the undug boil’s root was dug out by me!’ Even though Uddaka son of Rāma was no knowledge master, he said ‘I’m a knowledge master.’ Though he was no conqueror of all, he said ‘I’m conqueror of all.’ And though the boil’s root was not dug out, he said ‘I’ve dug out the boil’s root.’ A mendicant might rightly say he

「比丘たちよ、ラーマの子ウッダカはかつてこのように語っていた。『ここにおいて、常に未だ掘り出されざる瘡の根を掘り出す者あり！』と。『ここにおいて、常に智慧の主たる者あり！ここにおいて、常に一切に勝利せる者あり！ここにおいて、常に未だ掘り出されざる瘡の根を、我によって掘り出されたり！』と。しかるに、ラーマの子ウッダカは智慧の主にあらずして、『我は智慧の主なり』と言えり。一切に勝利せる者にあらずして、『我は一切に勝利せる者なり』と言えり。また瘡の根は掘り出されていないにもかかわらず、『我は瘡の根を掘り出せり』と言えり。比丘たちよ、比丘はいかなる場合に、正しくこのように語ることができるであろうか。
