What does the saying ‘the world is empty’ refer to?” “Ānanda, they say that ‘the world is empty’ because it’s empty of self or what belongs to self. And what is empty of self or what belongs to self? 時に、尊者アーナンダは……仏陀に白して言った。「世尊よ、『世界は空なり』と説かれますが、この『世界は空なり』という言葉は、いかなることを指し示すのでしょうか」と。「アーナンダよ、世界は自己および自己に属するものを欠いているがゆえに、『空なり』と説かれるのである。では、何が自己および自己に属するものを欠いているのか。眼、色、眼識、および眼触は、自己および自己に属するものを欠いているのである。……また、意触を縁として生ずる楽受・苦受・不苦不楽受もまた、自己および自己に属するものを欠いているのである」と。
