そのとき、尊者パッグナは仏陀のもとへと赴き……こう申し上げた。「世尊よ、過去の諸仏、すなわち已に般涅槃に入られ、戯論を断ち、輪廻の流れを截ち、生死の輪廻を終わらせ、一切の苦を超え去られた方々について、誰かが語ろうとする場合、その語りの拠り所となる眼は存在するのでしょうか。耳は……鼻は……舌は……身は存在するのでしょうか……。またその語りの拠り所となる意は存在するのでしょうか。」「パッグナよ、過去の諸仏、すなわち已に般涅槃に入られた方々について誰かが語ろうとする場合を想定してみなさい……」
