Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha … and said to him: “Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘the world’. How is the world defined?” “It wears away, mendicant, that’s why it’s called ‘the world’. And what is wearing away? The eye is wearing away. Sights … eye consciousness … eye contact is wearing away. The painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises dependent on eye contact is also wearing away. The ear … nose … tongue … body … The mind … ideas … mind consciousness … mind contact is we
時に、一人の比丘、世尊のもとに参じ……かく申し上げた。「世尊よ、人々は『世界』というものを語ります。いかなるをもって世界と定義されるのでしょうか」と。
「比丘よ、それは滅び行くものである。ゆえに『世界』と呼ばれるのだ。では、何が滅び行くのか。眼は滅び行く。色は……眼識は……眼触は滅び行く。眼触を縁として生ずる苦なる、楽なる、あるいは不苦不楽なる受もまた、滅び行く。耳も……鼻も……舌も……身も……意も……法も……意識も……意触もまた滅び行く。
