「現法涅槃」について語られておりますが、尊者ウパヴァーナはかくのごとく世尊のもとへ参じ、こう申し上げました。「世尊よ、『現世において明らかなる教え』と申しますが、いかなる意味において、この教えは現法に顕現し、時を隔てず結果をもたらし、来たりて見よと招き、導きとなり、智慧ある者がおのおの自ら証知し得るものと言われるのでございましょうか。」
「ウパヴァーナよ、ある比丘が眼をもって色（しき）を見るとせよ。その者はその色と、色に対する欲求との両方を感受する。その者のうちに色に対する欲求が生じており、その者はそれをありのままに了知する。かくのごとくであるがゆえに、これこそ……」
