At Sāvatthī. Then Venerable Rādha went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: “Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘Māra’. So you should see consciousness as Māra, the murderer, the murdered, the diseased, the boil, the dart, the gloom, the gloominess. Those who see it like this see rightly.” How is Māra defined?” “When there is form, Rādha, there would be Māra, or the murderer, or the murdered. 舎衛城にての事なり。その時、尊者羅陀は仏陀のもとに詣で、礼拝し、一傍に坐して、こう申し上げた。「世尊よ、『魔羅』と呼ばれるものがございますが、魔羅とはいかなるものにございましょうか。」
「羅陀よ、色（しき）あるところに、魔羅あり、あるいは殺す者あり、あるいは殺される者あり。されば汝は、色を魔羅として、殺す者として、殺される者として、病めるものとして、腫れ物として、矢として、暗闇として、暗澹たるものとして見るべし。かくのごとく見る者は、正しく見るなり。」
また識（しき）においても同様なり。識あるところに、魔羅あり、殺す者あり、殺される者あり。されば汝は、識を魔羅として、殺す者として、殺される者として、病めるものとして、腫れ物として、矢として、暗闇として、暗澹たるものとして見るべし。かくのごとく見る者は、正しく見るなり。
