At Sāvatthī. choices … consciousness, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. This is called ignorance. And this is how an ignorant person is defined.” Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha and said to him: “Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘ignorance’. What is ignorance? And how is an ignorant person defined?” “Mendicant, it’s when an unlearned ordinary person doesn’t understand form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.
舎衛城にて。…意志の形成（行）、識（しき）、その生起、その滅尽、そして滅尽へと導く道を知らないこと、これを無明と呼ぶ。そして、これが無明の人の定義である。」
そのとき、一人の比丘が世尊のもとへ近づき、こう申し上げた。「世尊よ、人々は『無明』というものを説きます。無明とは何でありましょうか。また、無明の人とはいかなる者と定義されるのでありましょうか。」
「比丘よ、それは多くを聞かざる凡夫が、色（しき）を知らず、その生起を知らず、その滅尽を知らず、そして滅尽へと導く道を知らぬ、そのことである。
