At Sāvatthī. Now at that time Venerable Tissa—the Buddha’s cousin on his father’s side—informed several mendicants: “Reverends, my body feels like it’s drugged. I’m disorientated, the teachings don’t spring to mind, and dullness and drowsiness fill my mind. I lead the spiritual life dissatisfied, and have doubts about the teachings.” I’ve made up this simile to make a point. ‘A dense forest grove’ is a term for ignorance. ‘An expanse of low-lying marshes’ is a term for sensual pleasures. ‘A larg
サーヴァッティーにおいてのことである。その時、尊者ティッサ——父方より仏陀の従弟にあたる——は、数人の比丘たちにこう告げた。「諸兄よ、私の身体はまるで麻痺したかのように感じられます。方向感覚を失い、法は心に浮かび上がってこず、惛沈と睡眠が心を満たしています。私は不満を抱いたまま梵行を歩み、法に対して疑惑を抱いております。」
私はこの点を明らかにするために、一つの譬えを作った。「鬱蒼たる森の林」とは無明の謂いである。「広大なる低湿地の広がり」とは欲楽の謂いである。「大いなる……」
