時に一人の比丘、世尊のもとに参じ……こう申し上げた。「尊師よ、どうか世尊は、私のために簡略にして法を説いてくださいますように。私はその御教えを聞いて、ひとり遠離に住し、怠りなく、精進し、堅固に励みたいと存じます。」
「比丘よ、汝が想念するとき、汝は魔に縛られる。想念せざるとき、汝は悪しき者より解き放たれるのである。」
「よく会得いたしました、世尊よ。よく会得いたしました、善逝よ。」
「しかし比丘よ、汝はわが略説の意義を、いかに詳しく解するのか。」
「尊師よ、色を想念するとき、人は魔に縛られます。色を想念せざるとき、悪しき者より解き放たれるのでございます。」
