舎衛城にて。「はい、尊者よ。」「識の四つの依処は、地界のごとくに見られるべきである。歓喜と貪欲は、水界のごとくに見られるべきである。食を有する識は、五種の植物のごとくに見られるべきである。
「比丘たちよ、五種の植物がある。その五種とは何か。根より繁殖するもの、茎より繁殖するもの、挿し木より繁殖するもの、節より繁殖するもの、そして種子より繁殖するものが第五である。この五種の植物が、損なわれることなく、腐敗することなく、風雨の害を受けることなく、豊かな実りを持ち、よく保たれているとせよ――
