At Sāvatthī. Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “Sir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.” “Mendicant, you’re reckoned by what you have an underlying tendency for. 舎衛城にての事なり。
ある時、一人の比丘、世尊のもとに詣で、礼拝し奉りて、傍らに坐し、こう申し上げた。「世尊よ、願わくば仏陀、簡略に私に法を説き示したまわんことを。その御教えを聴聞したる後、私は独り離れた処に住し、遠離し、精進怠らず、熱心に、決意を持って修行に励みたく存じます。」
「比丘よ、汝は随眠を有するものによって数えられる。随眠を有さざるものによっては数えられぬのである。」
「承知いたしました、世尊よ。よく理解いたしました、善逝よ。」
「しかしながら、汝は我が簡略なる言葉の詳細なる意義を、いかに見解するや。」
