At Sāvatthī. Then Venerable Nanda—the Buddha’s cousin on his mother’s side—dressed in nicely pressed and ironed robes, applied eyeshadow, and took a glazed bowl. He went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him: “Nanda, as a gentleman who has gone forth out of faith from the lay life to homelessness, it’s not appropriate for you to dress in nicely pressed and ironed robes, apply eyeshadow, and carry a glazed bowl. It’s appropriate for you to stay in the wilderness,
舎衛城にて。時に尊者難陀――母方より仏陀の従兄弟にあたる者――は、丁寧に折り畳み整えられた衣を身に纏い、眼に化粧を施し、釉薬を塗った鉢を携えて仏陀のもとへと赴いた。そして礼拝し、一方の傍らに坐した。仏陀は彼に告げた。「難陀よ、信心をもって在家の生活を捨て、出家して無家の境地へと赴いた善家の子たる者が、丁寧に折り畳み整えられた衣を身に纏い、眼に化粧を施し、釉薬を塗った鉢を携えることは、汝にふさわしくない。汝にふさわしきは、阿蘭若に住することであり、
