舎衛城にてのことである。尊者羅睺羅は世尊のもとに参じ、礼拝して一傍に坐し、こう申し上げた。「世尊よ、いかに知り、いかに見れば、この識ある身と、外なるすべての相とに対して、我慢・我所・慢の心が滅せられ、分別を超え越えて、寂静にして善く解脱したるものとなるのでしょうか。」「羅睺羅よ、およそいかなる色も——過去・未来・現在、内なるものも外なるものも、粗なるものも細なるものも、劣なるものも勝れたるものも、遠きものも近きものも——すべての色を、正しき智慧をもって如実に観ずるならば……」
