このように私は聞いた。ラージャガハの近く、竹林精舎においてのことである。あるとき、尊者マハーカッサパは仏陀のもとに参じ、礼拝して、かたわらに座した。仏陀は彼に告げられた。「カッサパよ、汝はすでに老いた。その擦り切れた麻の糞掃衣は、汝にとって重荷となっておるであろう。ゆえにカッサパよ、汝は在家信者の施す衣を受け、食事の招待に応じ、私のそばに留まるがよい。」「世尊よ、私はながきにわたり、山林に住し、乞食して食を得、糞掃衣を纏い、三衣のみを所持してまいりました。そしてつねにそのような行を讃えてまいりました。」
