At Sāvatthī. Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and asked him, “Sir, how long is an eon?” “Mendicant, an eon is long. 舎衛城にての事なり。時に一人の比丘、仏陀のもとに参じ、礼拝して一傍に座し、かく問い奉りけり。「世尊よ、一劫とはいかほどの長さにございましょうか。」「比丘よ、劫とは長大なるものなり。それが何年、何百年、何千年、何十万年に及ぶかを計算することは容易にあらず。」「しかれども世尊よ、譬えをもってお示し願うことはかないましょうか。」「比丘よ、それはかなう」と仏陀は仰せになりけり。「たとえばここに巨大なる石の山ありと想い見よ——」かくのごとき譬えをもって観ずることは、一切の諸行に対して厭離し、離欲し、解脱するに、まことに十分なることなり。
